Equestrian Silver in the River Plate. Art for Riders and Horses

International Horse Fair, Dubai World Trade Centre. Dubai, 2018.

Curatorial & direction by José Eguiguren Molina

Eight centuries of Islamic rule on the Iberian Peninsula culminated in a rich equestrian heritage throughout Spanish lands, and an exchange in riding styles between Al-Andalus and the Christian Kingdoms. It was as such that Spanish riding culture became perhaps the most complex and diverse in European history. This legacy was taken on by the Spanish Conquistadors of the Americas towards the end of the 15th century, meaning that the Iberian heritage of luxurious horse trappings continued into the New World, with a vast diversity of techniques and features. For many years now we have been researching this extraordinary exchange between such different equestrian cultures, in order to identify a bridge between the horsemanship and its art in Hispanic tradition, Al-Andalus, and its legacy in the Americas.

The history of equestrian tradition in Latin America and, in this case, that of the River Plate region, goes back to the origins of Criollo culture. It has its roots in the equestrian practices that were prevalent throughout Spain, with its inherited Iberian and Andalusian influences on the ornamentation of the horse. This continued through the Viceroyalty, reaching its pinnacle after Independence from the early 19th century and into the first decades of 20th century, constituting an unparalleled chapter in the history of decorative arts and equestrian trappings.
